Review of Annie Knows Everything by Rachel Wood

If you read one book this summer, it has to be this one. Friendship, romance and comedy play out on the page in beautiful harmony, warming my heart with each sentence.

Emma lingers just below the surface, the book honouring it as a palimpsest for the original piece but stands equally strong upon its own two legs. Annie is brilliant and I felt myself warm to her from the very beginning. She’s smart and kind and she loves everyone around her with such depth.

The laugh out loud moments of humour perfectly balanced with moments of deep introspection and emotions, swinging like newton’s cradle but never feeling overwhelming. Annie is a character for all the girls who worry too much, who try to people please and who try to fix the world. The skill to bring comedy into a story cannot be understated and I loved every moment of humour, finding each timed to perfection.

And the exploration of Annie’s thought too, so much care was taken to build her up as a strong character with flaws that I resonated with and her sadness created a pit in my own stomach. The stakes of the story were brilliant too, keeping me on the edge of my seat right until the last page where I finally exhaled.
