Review of The Homecoming by Zoe Apostolides

Set in rural Northumberland, this is a quietly disturbing novel that follows a ghost-writer sent to record the memoirs of an elderly woman living alone in a large manor house. But when Ellen turns up and Miss Carey is nowhere to be seen, she’s left alone in the wilds of her mysterious estate. When Miss Carey does turn up, she seems confused to say the least and it only gets weirder from there...

I enjoyed the gothic foreboding of this novel and the relationship between the two women of different generations.

Whilst the horror fizzled out for me a little in the middle, I think the role of ghost-writer and theme of memoir is used really cleverly here and I would be eager to read more on this.
