In her debut, Alice Austen whisks us away to the heart of wartime Brussels, where Charlotte Sauvin lives with her father in a close-knit building, within the safety of a small community of neighbours and friends as the war rages on across and beyond Belgium’s borders.
As the war draws closer to home and the Nazis invade their safe haven, the found family that Charlotte once knew disappears as they scatter themselves across Europe.
The storyline of 33 Place Brugmann will touch your heart and transport you back in time through the multiple stories of the residents of the building. It follows each individual resident, sharing their lives as they move away from their previous one. I really loved this and the personal touches which made me really fall in love with Alice’s writing and the story that she was telling. The writing is truly spellbinding, filled with human emotion, connection and hope.
