This poetry collection felt fresh and accessible to anyone wanting to get into poetry or who wants to read more poetry about the female experience. As a singer-songwriter, Marina has swapped lyrics for sonnets and writes with a melodic, creative and freeing pace, breaking conventions and having fun on the page. The illustrations are bold and unique, making this such a pleasurable reading experience. I’ve not read many poetry collections with such striking visual elements. While poetry can often be seen as an impenetrable form of writing, this collection was not like that.
There’s so much Hollywood glamour with a love/hate relationship for the LA lifestyle within these poems, how fame goes hand in hand with shame and desire. It was so evocative and speaks to a generation of women who are fed up with being told how to look, act and present to the world.Â
Body image is a central theme, where Marina battled with her relationship with food which was dictated by her partner. Being allowed to be single and regain control of her life, there’s a real sense of unapologetic self which emerges in these poems through her ability to let go.
This poetry collection has style as well as substance. It is glitzy yet raw and bruising with honest reflections of womanhood, singledom and self love.Â
