Review of Hero by Katie Buckley

Writer's picture: thedebutdigestthedebutdigest

Hero doesn’t know whether to accept her partner’s proposal. Days have passed and she needs to give an answer. Through fictions and musings and retellings, Hero narrates her story and other stories in search for some greater meaning, to help her find some clarity. Her belief that women cannot be themselves, cannot be their own person, when married, is drowning her. She’s sinking under the expectation which comes with being a wife.

She met her partner at the restaurant she works at, he’s a chef, and they both knew they would end up together. She’s in love with him, but how much of herself is she willing to give away? She sees marriage as transactional and banal and horrifying. It’s a trap and she wants this freedom she’s harboured. She wants to be her own hero.

This is a story about stories, narratives within narratives. This is a book to race through, to devour in one sitting. It explores whether being a wife kills a woman’s individuality and how the roles women play take away from their personhood.
