Review of I Know where You Buried Your Husband by Marie O’Hare

Imagine Devious Maids colliding with Pretty Little Liars, then throw in a dash of I Know What You Did Last Summer — and you’ve got the deliciously dark, twisty cocktail that is Marie O’Hare’s I Know Where You Buried Your Husband.

This is a character-driven thriller with friendship and loyalty at it's core, as a group of five women — all completely different in character - become tightly bound by one shocking secret: seven years ago, they buried one of their husbands. Now, after years of drifting apart, they’re forced back together when a mysterious figure begins contacting them, threatening to blow their lives apart.

It’s a fun and punchy read that blends black comedy with thriller tropes, as the events unravel using alternating POVs, which also allows us to identify more with each woman. The tone reminded me of writers like Katy Brent and CJ Skuse — witty and dark, because surely we are all using humour as a coping mechanism at this point!

I genuinely found myself wondering: what would I have done in their shoes? And weirdly... I kind of thought they were cool? Beyond the twists, O’Hare does a brilliant job weaving in deeper themes — female friendship, power dynamics, revenge, and the all-important smashing of the patriarchy (yes, please). These threads are cleverly plaited through the storyline to create both emotion and of course, the drama.
