Review of Placeholders by James Roseman

If there was a book that captured the vibes of One Day crossed with Sally Rooney, I think Placeholders would be it! The book instantly captivates the reader with in-depth characterisations of our main characters, Aaron and Roisin, followed by explorations of inner thoughts and personal experiences which many of us will relate to such as loss, grief and hope. I am certain this book is one to read and annotate!

James’ writing is stunning, the storyline which is drenched with emotion and tenderness brilliantly draws the reader into the lives of Aaron and Roisin. Human connection, identity and understanding seeps into the pages of this unforgettable 250 page(ish) read - one that you’ll definitely be wanting to recommend to your book-loving pals! I really enjoyed the injections of real life complications and how our characters navigated them. I was impressed by the way in which James got right into the consciousness of his characters and showed real understanding for their needs and wants. Placeholders is a character driven novel with heart at its centre.
