Review of Amphibian by Tyler Wetherall

Girlhood at it’s finest. Puberty is a metamorphosis and Sissy is changing. Her body is no longer her own but something reptilian, strange, otherworldly, amphibian.

Sissy moves to a new school and becomes tethered to misfit Tegan. Their friendship blossoms and sours as they spend so much time together that they become one and the same. Testing the boundaries of adolescence, they message unknown men online, hang out with Tegan’s sister’s older friends, and push how far they can go before getting caught. But girls are going missing. They are not yet at a snatchable age, they are young and innocent, but how long will their bodies be undesirable? Girls have to be careful how they behave when men are around. It’s only a matter of time.

What a beautifully written, spellbinding, literary debut! This is everything I love to read about. As a girl who loves revisiting the tender, all-consuming, tantalising experience of coming of age, this was a delight. Not only is the cover gorgeous, the story within is extraordinary. Exploring mother-daughter relationships, female friendship and navigating girlhood, this book is a summer must-read for fans of The Girls and The Virgin Suicides.
