Review of Mr Sidhu's Post Office by Amman Brar

Mr Sidhu’s Post Office is the ultimate heart-warming novel, centring around Mr Sidhu, or David, as he's known to those in the community, who runs the local post office. Although he is at the heart of the community, knowing all of his regulars and their lives, Mr Sidhu has never ventured beyond his comfort zone to truly socialise. A widower with two grown children and a first-generation immigrant, he has always put work and family first.

When his work colleague (and low-key love interest) invites him to Christmas, he accepts, feeling as though he has become a burden to his children. From this point on, we begin to see a new side of Mr Sidhu as he is welcomed into a more social way of life, experiencing Christmas traditions, togetherness, and the chance to become more than just the community postmaster... Until the Horizon scandal turns his entire life upside down.

Amman drew on his father's career as a postmaster and his experiences to create this incredible novel, while also taking inspiration from the heartbreaking real-life stories of postmasters who were wrongly accused, found guilty, ostracised, and, in some tragic cases, took their own lives after being accused of stealing from their own communities and employer. Set against the backdrop of Richmond, with time slips to Mr Sidhu's childhood, the novel gives readers a deeper understanding of his determination to build a better life for himself and his family — a father's dream — and how the system ultimately failed him in the most devastating way. This is a truly unforgettable book.
